Dog Parks: Room to run!
ROSEVILLE, CA Dog Owner's Group - promoting recreational opportunities for Roseville area dog owners and their companion animals. The organization and its members were instrumental in helping to establish Marco Dog Park, the first off-leash park for dogs in the City of Roseville.

MUIR BEACH - Muir Beach is a designated off leash beach on the Pacific Ocean just below Stinson Beach.

POINT ISABEL - If you haven't been to Point Isabel, you don't know what you're missing. Point Isabel is an off-leash dog park comprised of a few hundred acres of bay front land in Richmond. Point Isabel is home to the largest collection of dogs and dog lovers many of us have ever seen. It's a great place for retrievers to fetch sticks out of the bay, for bird dogs to check out the avian population, for hounds to check out the great smells, and for any dog that likes to run and play.

SACRAMENTO, California and Taylorsville, Utah recently approved the establishment of off-leash dog parks.

ILLINOIS - Chicago Parks Department officials are considering a measure that would permit dogs on certain city beaches from October through April and during early-morning or late-night hours in the summer. Currently, dogs are not allowed on any city beaches.

VIRGINIA - Dogs may soon be allowed to run off-leash at two yet-to-be-determined parks in the Virginia Beach area. A local group of 120 dog owners worked for nearly two years garnering support for the parks before presenting a formal proposal to the city. They recommended six-month pilot programs be established in fenced-in areas at two neighborhood parks. City officials are now evaluating the proposal.

WISCONSIN - Parks and recreation officials in Middleton are considering plans for an off-leash dog park. Currently, pets are prohibited in the city's parks and conservancy areas.

CALIFORNIA - Congratulations to Calabassas on the opening of the city's first "bark park" in June.

FLORIDA - Kudos to the Ochlockonee River Kennel Club of Florida for their involvement in the establishment of a dog park in Tallahassee. Bonnie Wirth, Legislative Liaison, reports that the club donated over $4000 to fence a two-acre park complete with pooper scoopers, fire hydrants, watering holes, shade trees and park benches. Wirth notes that the park's popularity has led city and county park departments to plan additional leash-free areas in the community. Congratulations!

CONNECTICUT - Hartford's Board of Selectmen has voted to put signs in Hyde Park requiring people to clean up after their dogs. While the selectmen's decision is not law and fines cannot be levied, officials hope the signs will encourage people to be responsible for their dogs, thus eliminating the need to ban dogs from public parks. Clubs and federations looking to avoid restrictive legislation in their area may want to consider a similar effort.

PENNSYLVANIA - After receiving complaints about animal waste in several parks, the Mount Oliver City Council has voted to prohibit dogs in all borough parks. Reports of large numbers of dogs being allowed to run in the parks unleashed also raised council members' concerns about the possibility of dog aggression. Punishment for violating the dog ban could reach a maximum of $1000 and/or 30 days in jail.
